The Banana Republic clothing stores were founded in 1978. At that time Mel and Patricia Ziegler decided to open a travel-themed clothing store. They began the chain with two stores and actually made the majority of their sales from their eccentric, hand-illustrated catalogs.
These catalogs contained high-end items that were unique. The descriptions were usually chatty in nature and had fictional back stories form exotic locations. Even their not so unique items were given the same flared treatment in order to make things flow. Their stores became known for their authentic decorations and themed elements.
The chain was bought out in 1983 by The Gap, Inc. and has been rebranded as a mainstream luxury clothing retailer. Needless to say, working for the Banana Republic means that you’ll be working for the world class Gap Inc.
When you work for Banana Republic you’ll most likely find yourself in one of their stores. As a sales person you’ll deal directly with the customer helping them find the apparel that they are interested in.
Sometimes these positions receive a commission based on the amount of sales you do so if you are not a people person you might want to consider a different position. Assisting in sales is only part of the job, you’ll also be helping to maintain the cleanliness of the store, stock shelves, and maintain merchandise. You will also need to help customers with returns or other problems in a professional and timely manner.
Since the Banana Republic is a subsidiary of The Gap, Inc. corporate jobs are generally found under The Gap name. There are positions for designer, which would require a move to San Francisco or Los Angeles. This job would allow you to help design the many styles found in the Banana Republic stores. If you are interested in finance then they do need people who are trained in accounting to help work their payroll and finance offices.
