General Nutrition Center, or GNC, got it's start a lot longer than it appears. It started about 20 years before Mcdonalds did. GNC started out as a simple health food store in 1935. At this time David Shakarian opened the store, Lackzoom. It might not seem like the store was going to be a success after Shakarian only made $35 on his first day in business.
Within six months, however, Sharakrian was able to add a second store to his Pittsburgh based business. Within a year, he would lose both stores due to flooding. This did not stop him, however, and he rebuilt. By 1941 he was able to add 5 more stores to his chain.
During the 60ís Shakarian expanded beyond his Pittsburgh home and changed the name to General Nutrition Center, or GNC for short. Today, since Shakarianís passing, GNC operates hundreds of stores nationwide.
GNCís biggest employment opportunity is going to be in their retail stores. They often can be found in corner strip malls or big commercial center malls.
