In the early 1960's two building contractors decided to build a hotel and keep the rooms at reasonable rates. William Becker and Paul Greene already specialized in low cost housing and felt that the hotel industry needed the same thing.
They figured building costs, supplies, and land leasing would average into a six dollar a night rate, hence the name Motel 6. They were a no-frills hotel, with coin-operated television, functional décor, and no restaurant on site.
Today they are still among the cheapest rooms on the road, but they have added free color tv, free local and toll free calls, and free wake up calls.
This is about as basic as you can get with a hotel chain. So the positions at Motel 6 are going to be similar as all other hotels.
The will have to have a manager, who may at times double as front desk. As manager you will be responsible for making sure that your hotel is fully staffed and the schedule works. You will want to make sure you have enough housekeepers and that there is a front desk person or two working during the peak times.
As the front desk clerk it will be your job to get people checked into and out of their rooms. You'll handle any reservations that may come in, although the bulk of the business will be those stopping over for a night on their journey. You'll also provide wake-up calls and help to ensure that their stay is comfortable. You might be asked where a good place to eat is or other locations about town so you might want to be familiar with the town you work in so that you can point your guests in the right direction.
Motel 6 job benefits for all employees include:
- Medical & Prescription Drug Plan
- Vision Plan
- Dental Plan
- Basic and Supplemental Life & Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance
- Performance Bonuses
- Flexible Spending Accounts
- 401(k) Savings and Investment Plan
- Legal Plan
- Employee Assistance Program
- Credit Union
Also, being a housekeeper isn't as difficult at Motel 6. The rooms are designed to be functional more than anything else. You'll be responsible for cleaning not only the rooms the lobby and other areas of the hotel.
