In 1983, David Chu and an unnamed partner started an apparel company. They mainly focused on men’s sportswear. A year later they sold the company for cash and stock to State-O-Main. State-O-Main was an apparel company that was based out of New York.

Ten years later, in 1994, State-O-Main changed its name to Nautica. The company still specialized in sportswear but had broadened their line to include women’s and children’s wear as well as home goods and fragrances.

They are well known for their swimwear brands and use the spinnaker as their logo. The company was purchased by the VF Corporation in 2003.
