A & W Hamburgers started out in 1919 as a root beer stand in Lodi, California, by a guy named Roy Allen. A year later he opened his second stand. In 1923, with former employee Frank Wright, they opened the first road side drive-in restaurant in Sacramento. They are credited with being the first restaurant chain. are available nationwide. This is where the "A & W" comes from. "A" for Allen and "W" for Wright.
By 1933 there were more than 170 restaurants and by 1950 they went international starting off in Canada.
Famous for their Root beer ice cream floats and delicious hamburgers, A & W restaurants has been around since the beginning days of the fast food explosion.
