Hugh G. Harrison provided capital for B.S. Bull and Company in 1870. The dry goods‚Äô wholesaler company serving Minneapolis was short-lived, but the founders later established another similar company in 1926. Two companies, Newell Company and Winston, Harper and Fisher founded by B. S. Bull’s backers merged and formed Winston and Newell Company.
In 1928, Winston and Newell Company joined the Independent Grocers Alliance. It left IGA in 1942 to form a virtual chain of independently owned stores operating under U-Save and SUPERVALU banners. Nevertheless, it is still a supplier to many of IGA stores. After years of success, the company changed its name to Supervalu Inc. in 1952 and later modified to SUPERVALU in 1992.
The company‚ fame rose in 1967 when it was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It was the first voluntary group to be listed at the New York Stock Exchange and is still listed today.
Today, they operate over 2,500 stores with over 35,800 employees.
