Trader Joes is a specialty supermarket that started in the Greater Los Angeles area. In 1958 founder Joe Coulombe opened his first convenience store, Pronto Market. This store was similar to a gas station style store such as a 7-Eleven. Actually it was so similar the 7-Eleven chain that Coulombe redesigned his store and re-launched it as Trader Joe’s in 1967.
Trader Joe’s is unique in that instead of carrying upwards of 50,000 items in their stores they stock only about 4,000 items. Well over half of these items bear the Trader Joe name and logo.
The stores carry mainly environmentally friendly products and no longer carry foods imported from China, yet they manage to keep their prices low and reasonable.
They also offer many ways for you to have a successful grocery store career. The most important members of their crew are the Store Crew. You can start out as a part time crew member you’ll do a little of everything. You’ll interact with customers, run the register, bag groceries and stock the shelves.

If you are good at art you can be the store sign artist. The store sign artist will be in charge of creating handmade signs designed to decorate the aisle or sell the products. This will be in addition to the regular part time crew responsibilities.
You could also be a food demonstrator. You’ll have to do the regular duties but you’ll also get to plan, prepare and talk about food with the customers. If you like to cook and love interacting with the customers then you might enjoy this position. Because 80% of the management staff starts at the part time crew level then you have many chances to move into the Novitiate position. This is the entry-level supervisor.
