The original Whole Foods Market was opened in 1978 by John Mackey and his girlfriend Rene Lawson in Austin Texas. The store was then called Saferway and sold all natural food products. In 1980 Mackey partnered with Weller and Skiles to merge the Saferway with Clarksville Natural Grocery, resulting in the first store with the name Whole Foods Market.
This original store was 12,500 square feet and had 19 members of staff; it was at the time the largest health food store in existence. Today the Whole Foods Market has 291 stores in 38 states, six stores in Canada and six stores in the United Kingdom.
