Aldi is a great place to work just like many other grocery store competitors. It was founded by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946 when they took over their mother’s store in Essen which had been in operation since 1913.
The brothers continued to build more stores and by 1960 they amassed 300 shops, and split the operation into two separate groups, that later became Aldi Nord, headquartered in Essen; and Aldi Süd, headquartered in nearby Mülheim.
The two operate independently as separate divisions and both are among the world’s largest privately owned companies.
In 1961, they re-branded themselves with the name Aldi (a syllabic abbreviation for Albrecht Diskont) and are headquartered in Batavia, Illinois.
Today, ALDI has over 24,000 employees and has over 1,600 discount stores across 35 states and, due to its rapid growth, they’re projected to pass 2,000 locations by 2018 including Southern California.
Aldi is all about operating bare bones style with high quality food at everyday low prices with a quick-and-easy shopping experience. They stick to the quick and simple method of utilizing 4 to 5 aisles packed with only the essentials- things that are “must haves.”
They’re also big on partnering with with local “a wide variety of growers – including some local farmers – to offer a wide variety of fresh, in-season produce, including organic fruits and vegetables.”
They continue to say “From USDA Choice meats to gluten-free and organic foods, we are committed to bringing our shoppers the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices.”
That’s a nice declaration that should put to ease the minds of conscientious consumers.
