AutoZone started its existence as Auto Shack. It was a division of the wholesale grocer Malone and Hyde which was Memphis based chain. In 1979 Auto Shack opened its doors for the first time in Forrest City, Arkansas. Even though the store only brought in $300 the first day the store began to grow.

In 1988, after the company was sold to the Oklahoma City based Fleming Companies, the Auto Shack changed its name to AutoZone. With the name change the store really began to expand.

Today Autozone has over 5,000 stores nationwide and employs over 70,000 employees.

With so many locations their store locations are among the most important jobs that they have. As a store associates, also known as an AutoZoner, you will be responsible for putting the customer first. You will have to assist customers with their purchases.

You’ll have to arrive on time, you’ll be required to keep the store clean, including the bathroom and you’ll also have to help load and unload trucks. You will also be required to help stock the shelves. While automotive aftermarket experience is preferred it’s not required. AutoZone requires all of their employees to complete training.

If you have experience working in management you might find your niche as a field manager. As a district manager you will be required to lead a team of store managers. You’ll have to work together to solve business challenges, drive sales, and build capabilities of the associates.

You’ll also work together to develop local strategies in order to serve customers better. A regional manager works with the district managers to achieve strong results including sales, store standards, customer experience and people development. You will also have access to field support, which includes positions in human resources, field maintenance, and loss prevention.
