Bank of America is the largest bank holding company in the United States, by assets. It is the second largest bank when you consider market capitalization. It is the second largest non-oil company in the Unites State, second only to Wal-Mart.
The company has its roots in the Bank of Italy which was founded in 1904 by Amadeo Giannini in San Francisco. It was originally set up as a way for immigrants to have banking services when they were denied service from other banks.
The company began to grow and in 1927 he consolidated the 101 branches of the Bank of Italy with the 175 branches of Liberty Bank of America.
