In 1953 Burt Baskin and Irvine Robbins opened their first ice cream parlor. They both started in the ice cream parlor business separately owning Burt’s Ice Cream Shop and Snowbird Ice Cream respectively. Irvine’s store, Snowbird, featured 21 flavors which was unheard of at the time.
When they joined ventures they grew their flavors to 31, which is what they became known for. In 1967 the United Brands Company purchased the franchise which had grown considerably. In 1972 the company was sold again to Lyons and Co which merged with Allied Brewers. After several more mergers Baskin Robbins, and several other holdings, were spun off into the Dunkin’ Brands Inc.
Today there are over 5,000 Baskin Robbins locations worldwide.
