Big 5 Sporting Goods was founded in 1955 by Maury Liff in Hawthorne, California, and since then has expanded into a major sporting goods retailer with 420 stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
It is a major retailer of apparel and footwear, fitness equipment and supplies, outdoor recreational gear, and sports gear and stocks all the major brands in one location.
Their stores generally feature over 10,000 square feet of retail space divided into several departments, and operate 7 days a week from 10am to 10pm on weekdays, 9am to 9pm on Saturdays and 10am to 7pm on Sundays. Due to the large-scale format of sporting goods stores, a large and ready workforce is always required.
