Let’s start by stating the obvious: Five Guys Hamburgers isn’t a business, it’s a cult with plenty of temples. Then, Five Guys Hamburgers doesn’t have customers; it has fans, like a rock band or an actor. Bands and actors live of selling their art (records and movie tickets) to fans, and Five Guys Hamburgers lives of selling its art (hamburgers, fries and hotdogs) to fans for a living.
This is how serious Five Guys Hamburgers is taken in the United States and Canada. The company started back in the Washington, DC area in 1986, when the four young Murrell brothers were advised by their parents, Jerrie and Janie: "Business or college, you choose." Business it was and the Murrell family opened a carry-out burger house in Arlington, Virginia.
The little burger house quickly developed a cult-like following by thousands of fans. The Press paid attention, and customers voted their burger"#1" in the metro area. Later on, a fifth brother was born and, as their family grew, and so did their business. Early in 2003 the family began offering franchise opportunities and, in just 18 months, Five Guys Enterprises sold options for over 300 units. The smashing success of franchising a local restaurant made national news with articles in luminaries like Nation’s Restaurant News, Restaurant Business Magazine and the Franchise Times. Nowadays, the company has 1,000 locations nationwide and over 1500 units in development. The company is so celebrated that the cult isn’t national anymore; it’s crossed borders and continents!
As the company says, there are over 250,000 ways of ordering a burger at the Five Guys. The number is amazing per se alone, but when you figure that some of their specialties are called Hamburger, Cheeseburger or Cheese Dog ( yes, JUST LIKE THAT), the amazing number becomes ASTONISHING! Their secret relies on the FREE toppings they offer with each specialty: mayonnaise, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions and mushrooms, jalapenos, green peppers… the list is endless, and each specialty with toppings is a towering homage to Mount Everest.
Besides the edible specialties, they also sell apparel like skate-like clothing and accessories (hats, car plates, etc.), which makes the myth and the followers grow.
As for employment, the company’s standards are very straightforward, like their working method: they are always on the look for amicable bright people that share the same seriousness and integrity, as well as joy, and that consider serving a hamburger or a hot dog not a job but a science and a mission. The perks? A salary, a healthy working space and the opportunity to grow not only as an employee but as a person as well. As simples as the art the company offers.
