The first of many Mervyn’s stores was opened in San Lorenzo California. In 1949 the store opened it’s doors under the foundation of store owner Mervin G. Morris.
The store was unique by having everything that the customers needed in a department store with all the frills of some of their competitors. They had merchandise such as t-shirts, jeans, and even linens. Some of the items were considered flawed by their manufacturers and therefore were able to be sold at a discount.
The store was originally supposed to be named Mervin’s with an “I” but the architect suggested that he change the spelling the Mervyn’s with a “Y.”
When the stores were open they had the traditional retail fuel outpatients. You could work as a sales clerk, store manager, stock clerk, or buyer.
Their corporate offices also included jobs like finance office, human resources, Internet technology, and other corporate positions. During its heyday Mervyns had 189 stores over 10 states. By early 2007 however they had decided to close all of its and locations live in Oregon and Washington and is reduced the number of stores to 177 and then only in seven states.
These store closures were due to underperformance and lack of contribution to the company success. Mervyns filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 2008 within three months they made the announcement that a chapter 71 Actually Take Pl. in they began liquidating the assets on October 31 of that year. All of their assets were liquidated and by the end of 2008 the remaining hundred and 77 stores were closed.
Within two months the Morris family have been met had announced that they bought back the intellectual property as well as the naming rights to the company with the help to relaunch Mervyns as an Internet-based store.
