Although now owned by Wells Fargo, Wachovia has its roots going all the way back to 1879 when William Lemly opened the Wachovia National Bank. In 1911 the bank merged with Trust Company and Wachovia Loan.
Thanks to the account of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company Wachovia grew to be one of the largest banks in the southeast.
